recall_memory MCP Tool

The recall_memory tool returns the most recent items of a conversation’s durable, ordered memory log. It serves as the everyday method for clients to rehydrate recent context at the start of a session or after a gap.

This tool requires the site’s Basic authentication credentials.

When called, recall_memory retrieves the last count items from the specified conversation, returning them in ascending sequence order. The oldest item of the returned tail appears first. If the log holds fewer items than the requested count, all available items are returned. A conversation with no items—including one that has never been appended to—results in an empty list, not an error. This behavior simplifies client-side logic, as a fresh conversation ID requires no special handling.

To read the entire log from a chosen position, or to rebuild a conversation from the start, use the replay_memory tool. To discover which conversations exist for your site, use the list_conversations tool.

The conversation_id is a pseudonymous handle minted by the client. It is an opaque string of 8-64 characters composed of [A-Za-z0-9_-] (UUIDs and nanoids fit this pattern). This ID must remain stable for a single conversation and must never be derived from personal data such as names, e-mail addresses, or account IDs.

Memory operations must never block the conversation: the append acknowledgment is a durability signal, not flow control. Validation errors are permanent, while other failures are safe to retry after buffering the batch; duplicates from retries are tolerated.

Field Type Description
conversation_id string The pseudonymous handle of the conversation to read, minted by the client: 8-64 characters from [A-Za-z0-9_-], stable for one conversation, never derived from personal data. A malformed ID is rejected outright; an unknown one reads as an empty list.
count u64 How many items to return, counted from the end of the log: the last count items in ascending sequence order, fewer if the log holds fewer, none for 0. Defaults to 50, with a maximum of 1000.
Field Type Description
items array of McpMemoryItem The recalled items in ascending sequence order. This array is empty if the conversation holds no items, including if it was never appended to.
